One of the major decisions couples must decide before starting their wedding planning process is choosing the formality that they want for their wedding. Their  choice can be dictated by the budget of the couple, the location of the reception, and their guest count. It is a personal choice as to how the couple would like to have their day influenced and what type of setting they would like to have present at their wedding.

Formal/Black Tie – Typically formal weddings are more traditional, meaning more of a fancy gathering and requires guests to dress up elegantly. There are more rules regarding the ‘etiquette’ of the event, and usually this means the venue is at a nicer location and the food is plated. Couples will spend more on the decor, food, venue, and their personal attire. Most times these events will take place in the evening.

Mens attire:

Dark colored suit, black-tie, bow tie, dark dress shoes

Women’s attire:

A dark/neutral colored evening dress/gown or a formal cocktail dress. Heels are highly recommended.

Semi Formal/Cocktail– A semi-formal wedding is a slightly more relaxed event than a formal wedding. You should still expect the couple to follow most wedding traditions, but you can also expect a fun and playful reception with some lively music and dancing.  Decorations aren’t as elaborate as they are for formal weddings, but they still have a nice classy touch to them.

Men’s attire: 

Suit and tie with dress shoes

Women’s attire:

Cocktail dress, jumpsuit, formal blouse and skirt, chit flats or smaller heels.

Casual– Some couples are not as interested in the formality or fanciness of their wedding, so they decide to keep it casual. Many guests dress business casual for these occasions. Food is normally in buffet style and sometimes food trucks are present for appetizers and meal. The décor and other decorations will be simple.

Women’s attire:

summer dress, skirt and business casual blouse, jumpsuit
